I will let you know all the real things about glass flattening.

Are you thinking of sticking your glass bottle to the bonfire, and then it will slump so easily? No, this is not so easier to make bottle-slumping molds with a normal bonfire. Follow the article step by step. I will guide you to make these crafts easily at home.

What Does Kiln Mean?

The glass is liquid in nature. Once you heated wine bottles, it turns into glossy form when the temperature goes up to 1000°F (537.7°C), and after raising the temperature to 1200°F (648.9°C), it starts melting or slumping.

However, melting glass bottles in a microwave at such a high temperature isn’t possible since the microwave’s highest temperature is 212°F (100°C). In this situation, we use a kiln, which is an insulated heating chamber. The kiln can produce 1500 °C (2732 °F) temperature in projects, which is a matter of time. So how to slump wine bottles without a kiln? Keep reading the article.

What is the Difference Between a Kiln and an Oven?

The proper temperature is required for different glass crafts, metal formation, die works, or even cooking. The precise management of heat and time is important to hold the specific work properly. Why should you need a kiln or oven for DIY crafts? Let’s find out the suitable method for fusing wine bottles.

Kiln: The kiln is used to manufacture glass or ceramic ware and pottery. This heating chamber is controlled for specific work. You can easily set the required temperature for slumping glass or other materials, and then it allows in decreasing the heat to room temperature. The temperature of the kiln is between 1700° F – 2350° F.

Oven: On the other hand, an oven is used for making or warming food and drying under lower temperatures as a furnace. The range of temperature of the oven is between 212° F – 900° F

How to Slump Wine Bottles with the Help of Kiln

Flattening a wine bottle in an oven that is used for normal cooking and baking is a bad idea. The wine bottle flattening DIY projects is growing respectfully for plenty of reasons. To be specific, playing with hot staff is very tough without controlling heat and other precautions. So I always prefer to work with controlled inclusion that could be Kiln or similar to Kiln setting.

Things to Be Needed for Fusing Wine Bottles

  • Wine bottle
  • Kiln and other electrical setups
  • Safety pieces of equipment (Thick Gloves and Respiratory Mask)
  • kiln wash or paper
  • Soap and isopropyl
  • Borax to devitrified (Optional)
  • Towel
  • A concerned person for help

Method-1 Procedure of Wine Bottle Flattening in a Mini Glass Kiln

Step-1 Prepare the Kiln. To fusing wine bottles, a glass melting kiln is perfect because glass needs more than 15000 F (8150 C) temperature to form a molded shape, so make sure that an electrician well sets up your power supply source, or else improper voltage supply may hamper the desired temperature, you need for bottle slumping molds.

Step-2 Make sure the safety precaution. When we work with high temperatures, electricity, power saw, or other risky jobs, our health’s safety comes first. Wearing heat-resistant gloves and goggles are suitable for kiln job tested by ASTM F1060 standards, and a respiratory mask for cleaning dust or handling sprays for the kiln is the best preparation before working with Kiln.

Make sure that your working environment is well ventilated to pass the hot air easily. The normal temperature of a Kiln in the interior is higher than the oven or fireplace.

Step-3 Coat the Kiln surface to protect from a hot flame. The surface of the Kiln can be damaged by spilled glass fragments when melting the glass at high temperatures. In that case, we make a coating by using Kiln wash powder. Now, mix the powder with water and plate it on the surface more than about 5 times. The number of applied coating can vary depending on surface smoothness and the consistency of paste.

If you found it bumpy, cracking, or lessening a part, keep applying the Kiln wash mixture. Besides, a Kiln fiber is also protective of the surface. Spread the paper according to shelf size and shape and fire up the Kiln at a temperature of 14000 F (7600 C) to make the paper black.

Step-4 Place the shelf inside the Kiln. The Kiln shelf is always mounted above the surface, and a ceramic post is placed just underneath the shelf, which allows passing hot air all around the inner space of the Kiln.

Step-5 Prepare the wine bottle. Slumped wine bottles with labels are a bad idea. To remove the label and other foreign materials from the bottle surface, we soak the bottle in hot soapy water for an hour into a bucket and scrub it with a coarser plastic thing to remove all brand labels and stickers. In that case, you can also use detergent and a heat gun to remove extra gum or stickiness from the surface.

Sometimes the painted label and sticker are adamant about removing, leaving them to form a great design after fusing wine bottles. Remove the fingerprint impressions, and clean the bottle using isopropyl. And use gloves from the very beginning.

Step-6 Leg the wine bottle with Kiln paper and put a stop to rolling. When we place the bottle on the Kiln surface, it rolled up for the time being. So we feel to support holding the same place without rolling and prop the bottle by a small piece of Kiln glass, you can also use cracked glass in both sites for support.

Step-7 Fire the glass melting kiln at 11000 F (5900 C) primarily and follow the heating techniques. The heating technique is crucial in glass blowing kiln. If you make any mistake, it might be a loss for you. Start the kiln by setting the intermittent temperature at around 5000 per hour for heating the bottles primarily and rise to 11000 F (5900 C). Such heat is harmful to ceramic molds, so lower the heat to avoid damage to your molds. Now continue this temperature for 10 minutes and follow the next step.

After raising the temperature to 11000 F, slowly increase it to 2500 F per hour, and after an hour when it rises to 13000 F, hold the position for half an hour. In this phase, the bottle starts to transform into a flat from the middle position. However, rapidly heat the bottle to 14000 F at this moment and wait to slump the bottle into the desired appearance.

Step-8 Lower the temperature to 10000 F (5400 C). To reduce the heat, we open the Kiln lid with maintaining safety distance and wearing heat-resistant equipment.

Step-9 Leave for Annealing. After decreasing the heat between 9000 F and 11000 F, we leave it for better Annealing with -1500 F per hour. You can leave the bottle with high heat for more devitrification.

Step-10 Cool down the Kiln to normal temperature, and this is the simplest step in this method.  The bottle must be slumped up now and clean the Kiln floor’s surface using a respiratory mask. The flattened wine bottle crafts are ready with the simple and straightforward steps mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions on How to Flatten a Wine Bottle Without a Kiln

What Happens When Glass is Placed in Fire?

This is the most decent question from curious learners. The glass is liquid in nature, so when it gets into the fire at a high temperature, the non-crystalline nature allows it to form and flow. In enough heat, it will flow like a liquid, and by using the advantages of the Annealing process, glass workers come up with different types of glass arts and crafts.

Can I Melt Glass Without Any Fire or Flame?

This is very tough to answer properly. Think it yourself, do you have any option to make high temperature without ignitions. Normally, the glass starts melting at 16000 F, so you need a source that is capable of producing such heat. This is very much possible with chemical reactions but very risky for us to experiment with. So going with a mini Kiln or propane torch with MAPP gas is a better idea.
