Remember, if you want to make a cuffed hem you must allow the extra measurements. Here, I take 6.35 cm length from inseam that includes 5.08 cm final length and rest of the length for fraying extra or loose thread.
    • Lay off the half snipped jeans over a flat surface.
    • Put another mark on the other side (along the side seam) of the pilot mark you have at the same leg and that should be 1 or 2 inches diagonal or above against the elementary point on the inseam.  This will give you the sharp and most flattering edge with a smooth hemline with the fray. I mark it at 3.81cm above.
    • Use the scale and connect both sides with chalk or white powder. You can also use the ruler for the straight lines.
    • Take the length measurement from the inseam and waistline. This measurement will guide where you should put the accurate mark for the symmetrical piece. On the other hand, you can also fold the shorts in half for the same size and shape.

    Place the scale over the primary point across the leg and put a mark along the side seam. Now, this point is pretty obvious because you know the exact point from where you must take the upward measurement.

    • Here, you can point out all the area whether you want to fray with a white marker. If you preplan and think about how to distress shorts, a better result will come out finally. Normally, I don’t do this because I know what is going to happen- you don’t need to do this when you are with me.

    Step-2 Place a Cardboard inside the Shorts

    Now, grab cardboard and cut it that fits inside the shorts perfectly. Cardboard is perfect for this project as it’s hard and you can resize it as you need by straight razor. Once you’ve prepared the cardboard take it and put it inside the shorts whether you’d like to work on it.  The objective of this cardboard is obvious because we’d never like to destroy the opposite side where we are using straight razors or other sharp tools.

    • A rotary mat is also usable in this project. So, you can use a rotary mat instead if you have one.
    • Take out the cardboard after finishing each area and put it again inside the new area of destruction (tears and holes) of your shorts. Don’t use any sharp object without protecting the opposite side by sliding cardboard inside otherwise your desire result will never come out.

    Step-3 Make Holes Using a Straight Razor in Different Place Very Carefully

    This is the first fraying touch on the shorts’ body. For this, I would like to make some small holes in the front area. To do this, take a straight razor and push it down to get a sharp straight cut line. Make sure enough pressure is given on each hole and your cardboard is also placed under the cutting area.

    • I make three holes step by step from the left to right side and one inch below each cut line. To be specific, at first I make an initial hole at the left side and just 5 inches above from the bottom opening. After that, I make the middle hole just 1inch apart and below the initial cut. The third one is also created by the same instruction. Here, you can make your own choice.
    • Press down with pressure to ensure a perfect and straight cut.
    • Here, you don’t need to stick with the given place of holes you can make it anywhere in the shorts.  The hole placement exactly depends on you. You can put it near the bottom opening of the backside or front side, on the pockets, or under the butt of shorts for a nice and elegant distressed look.

    Step-4 Take a Disposal Razor and Scrape it across the waist and Other Places to Make it More Distress

    This step is used to make more professional frayed looks to your shorts. In that case, take a disposable razor and place it in the exact position you want to fray. Now start rubbing it slowly on the surface of shorts. Increase the rubbing speed and make it back and forth continuously which will scuff the surface and appears some frays.

    • It is an easy step to make the frayed shorts with distress effect within less effort. There is no limitation for distress. Go to the waistline or places that were previously cut on the shorts and rub the disposable razor.
    • The pocket hem is also a decent area that could be a great place for distress. Fray the bottom hem thread and your frayed shorts is ready to wear.

    Method-2 Fraying by Sandpaper

    Step-1 Place the Shorts on a Flat Surface and Mark all the Points where you’d Love to Cut

    When you have a plan to make a genuine hole on the shorts, grab a fabric marker, and identify all the areas you’ve selected before. Either use s chalk to mark narrow and short lines whatever the place is. Don’t select any area that will make your fashion worst. Remember to make holes near the bottom hems, in pockets, or under the butt that are still wearable.

    • This step will make your next process easier because the earlier placement of holes helps you to identify the places that are going to cut. On the other hand, it will help you to organize holes more precisely.
    • On the other sense, it can determine how to distress frayed shorts accurately without any disaster. Use any kind of cutting sequence as like make 2 or 3 holes closely or 2 holes closely with mega holes just above.

    Step-2 Take Scissors and Cut the Mark Holes in Shorts

    • Remember that the coarser the sandpaper is the holes will wider after a small amount of rub on your snipped that have already been made.
    • Again, the effects depend on your choice, check it frequently, and stop when you want to stop.
    • The final distress look will be soft and smooth and that should be frayed.

    Method-3 Fraying by a Tweezers

    Step-1 Select Small Section to Avoid Large Holes over Time

    The holes you created on the shorts will make them fray over time by popping out the threads from the edge. But, to make the process quickly picking out the threads from the jeans by seam rippers or tweezers is an effective and time-saving method. If you don’t want to make a large hole, you must avoid it from the very beginning, and you mustn’t cut the section more than 1-inch (2.54cm) large.

    • Don’t stick with only fraying hem unless on your shorts, go all the way around and make a small section to pick out the threads.

    Step-2 Cut a Small Area in Your Shorts by a Scissor

    Using tweezers and seam rippers for fraying or pulling threads (Snag) is a better tool that executes this sort of project more comfortably and spaciously. But first, you necessitate selecting the area to make a tiny cut in your shorts. Since the tweezers and seam rippers are used to pull out the threads, so a pre-cut is must be needed to open the edge you’d like to fray.     Method-1 Steaming or Heating

    Tools Required for Steaming Method

    • Pin
    • Measurement tape
    • Wax chalk  
    • Steam Iron or Iron

    Step-1 Prepare the Elastic Waistband

    In this method, I’m going to apply press by steam iron directly to compress the elastic property of the waistband in terms of size adjustment. To do this, the first step would be preparing the waist belt to the required size on a table or ironing board. If you don’t have any board you can use a bed mattress easily. Here, I measure my waist requirements of mine and place the trouser over the table. After taking the measurement, we are ready to pin the bottom of the elastic.

    Step-2 Put the Measurement and Pin It

    Now, mark the start and endpoint with a wax marker from right to left. Place the trouser waist or slide it between the marked space, and you are ready for the next step.

    Step-3 Dampen the Towel Using the Water Sprayer

    Here, I’m going to use a steam iron, but if you don’t have a steam presser, you must take a damp towel or cloth. Now, spray (gardening water sprayer is more than enough for this task) sufficient water for damping the towel or cloth. Don’t immerse it directly into the full bucket. We want to create heat through vapor or steam without ironing elastic directly. The elastomeric material might melt indirect heat.

    Step-4 Switch the Steam Iron or Dry Iron

    Dry Iron

    Switch the power button after inserting the plug into the wall socket and regulate it to the highest heat setting. While the red light goes off, you are ready to press the elastic to fix the stretched elastic waistband. Make sure that, your towel is still damp enough to generate enough vapor and heat accordingly.

    Steam Iron

    In that case, fill the water compartment of your steam iron and switch the power button. Leave it and wait for getting enough heat. Once it has gained adequate temperature, the red light will go off automatically. Now your iron should be ready for pressing the enlarged elastic waistband.

    Step-5 Lay off the Damp Towel

    Once you’ve placed the bottom waist inside the measurement point on the table, place the damp towel over the trouser.

    Step-6 Start Pressing

    Start pressing it with normal pressure. Remember that, when you are using a dry iron and damp towel, you must press for a long time to adjust the stretched elastic if you are using a steam iron then you don’t have to give heat for a long time because this would be given directly on elastic.

    Note- With this method, you will be able to minimize 5% of elasticity to the stretched waistband. The basics of reducing the diameter of the elastic waist are pretty simple. When we stretch the waistband or wear it for a long time, it increased in diameter and simultaneously decreases some height or width and elastomeric properties of rubber inside.  And, while it is treated under heat with steam, it can recover elasticity in between 5% without any extra tricks. On the other hand, if the rubber inside is breaking down or loses almost 30% of elastic properties then you should avoid this technique. Cut Out the Extra Elastic and Sew

    Method-2 Cut Out the Extra Elastic and Sew

    Tools Required for Extra Edge Cutting Method

    • Sharp fabric scissor
    • Measurement tape
    • Sewing machine and thread
    • Stitch opener
    • Pencil or Marker

    Step-1 Turn Inside the Bottom

    All the stitches are used to make this bottom isn’t visible. So, turn it to make an easy and comfortable situation for further process. On the other hand, you will be exactly concerned and also could see what you are doing. This will make your work more precise and better.

    Step-2 Find the End or Middle Point of Waistband Seam

    In most cases, elastics are sewn inside the waistband fabric into clothing with a seam.  Moreover, you can’t pull it from the original position without cutting it somewhere because it’s stuck into a case. Now, stretch the seam of the waist by fixing the one side by the left hand if you seem that the elastic moves freely then you would cut the seam anywhere you like. But I recommend cutting the seam from the fabric joint at the backside of trousers or bottoms.

    On the other hand, if you feel that the elastic inside it snag or is stuck with seam stitch then you should identify the area where it stuck, and you could start opening the stitch from that position. Here, you could open the stitches in multiple areas for a better result.

    Step-3 Open the Back Rise Seam Join (Backside Seam of Bottoms) 

    Start removing stitch the seam from the closing stitch (Top Stitch) of the waistband. Better if you could start the work from the join of back rise parts.  Now, keep removing the stitch around 2 ½ inches apart from the middle of the joint. After that, you will see the elastic inside.

    Step-4 Pull the Elastic and Measure the Length You Need

    Once, you loosen the casing stitch and are able to find the elastic. Now, you must pull out the stretched elastic from the elastic case and measure the length you should cut for adjustment. Here, the required measurement must be taken at the beginning of this technique. With a sharp scissor cut the elastic.

    Note- Suppose your waist measurement is 42-inch whereas the stretched waistband measurement is 50-inch correspondingly. That is an 8-inch extended from the waist measure requirement. So, you should cut this 8-inch extra edge right? But, it would be best if you left a sewing allowance for the security tack of elastic at the end of the cutting point. In that case, I always leave 1-inch from both sides for overlapping and box making, which is mostly called security tack. Cut only 6-inch and extra 2-inch will reduce in overlapping.

    Step-5 Sew the Elastic End Point

    Thread up your sewing machine (Regular-301 stitch) and put the left end of elastic over the right end. If you are new to the sewing machine, you can make a box by using a pencil or marker before you start sewing. It will make your work much comfortable with extra confidence.

    • Now, Overlap the endpoint of elastic with facing a marked point in the top and put it into the sewing feed. Here, I always penetrate the needle at the start point of the stitch by rotating the sewing machine manually and then again align all the sewing parts accurately.
    • Keep sewing it by following the mark and after finishing it make cross stitch as like as an “X” in a similar size box.
    • Close all the stitches you removed and the waistband is totally new and nicely fitted in your waist.

    Method-1: Using Wire Cutters

    When you need a small number of dowels, you can use a wire cutter. Though the cutting end of dowels is chipped out for using a wire cutter, it’s useful for small projects. Here we will make 10 pieces of dowels each 1 ½ inch long. Follow the step-by-step process for cutting with wire cutters.

    Step-1          

    First, we take long wooden dowels of ¼ inches diameter and mark from the ending point by using measurement tape. Since the endpoint of dowels will remain unfinished, you can add ½ mm extra with length. Here we will take 1 ½ inch because we use this for mortise of furniture and finishing will be done after joining.

    Step-2          

    Now clamps the wooden dowels and place the mark side to top as you have done before. This mark will guide measurement. Ensure the holding capacity against a given force that will create by wire cutters.

    Step-3          

    In this stage, we cut all the pieces with wire cutters. If you use cutters slowly and in one way, you will get fewer wooden chips after cutting.

    Step-4          

    Flush the all chips from dowels using sandpaper is the best way. Use 320-grit sandpaper to get the best result.

    Using a table saw with the jig is a great plan for the production and quality of dowels. This method is mainly used in carpenter’s stores, where they need a large number of small dowel pins.     Step-8 Lower the temperature to 10000 F (5400 C). To reduce the heat, we open the Kiln lid with maintaining safety distance and wearing heat-resistant equipment. 

    Step-9 Leave for Annealing. After decreasing the heat between 9000 F and 11000 F, we leave it for better Annealing with -1500 F per hour. You can leave the bottle with high heat for more devitrification.

    Step-1 Cutting the Leather Strap

    This step is critical, but if you have the right tools, this work is easiest. Thick leather is more comfortable to cut than thin leather. At first lay off the leather on the self-healing cutting table. After that, mark the belt width according to buckle opening; otherwise, the leather strap will not adjust with the buckle. Now markup the width and length using measurement tape as required. Here I take 2 inches for width considering buckle opening.

    The best practice of taking length is from the old belt size or waist measurement using measurement tape. Now take the edge of a plumber or a strong scale and align upon the mark and place the ruler knife or hobby knife. Drag several times gently to cut out completely. Keep attention on your hand while cutting. Also, cut all the sides of your leather strap accordingly following the same method. Now you have a basic leather belt structure for the next process.

    Step-2  Making the Tip

    The tip of the belt helps in easy insertion through loop and buckle. For this, you can take any endpoint of the strap for the tip; if you want a diagonal shape, then you can mark by a scale and cut it using a sharp knife. This shape is easy to form without any technique and tools.

    On the other hand, you need some specific tools for a rounded shape. However, you can also do this by using some techniques. At first, you have to divide your belt endpoint into 1 inch and put a point mark. After that, a rounded bottle like a beverage can or soda bottle can be placed over the middle of the endpoint, and left 1 or 1 ½ inches from both the right and left sides equally. Mark it properly and cut extra leather using a rounded knife. The best part is using a rounded still sheet.

    Step-3 Edge Smoothing and Polishing

    After cutting the strap, the edge remains sharp and shows inner raw color with fuzzy naps. To remove these naps from the leather edge, I use gum, known as Gum Tragacanth. This name sounds weird, but a smooth edge will appear on the leather strap after applying this.

    Before using this, Gum cut all the sharp edges of both sides with a precision knife to make it rounded, and then apply Gum using cotton buds or foam. Take a wooden dowel and rub the surface of the edge. It makes the surface smooth and glossy. You can use any coloring substance for a better look.

    Step-4 Making Hole to Edge of Leather Belt for Sewing Guide

    In this step, I’m going to make a hole around the belt using a sharp nail. This hole is a sewing guideline because without making a hole, you can’t stitch through thick leather. This is not mandatory. I’m doing this because I love this pattern for a fashionable look. So you can skip this step if you want.

    First, take the leather strap and mark around the belt and keep the same gap between edge and mark. Now lay off the strap on a cutting table and attach strong gum tape to place it properly. In this case, a wooden table is best for use. Now take a sharp nail considering the thread count and place it over the pencil mark, and hammer it to make a hole. This is very tricky, but if you understand, once this work will be easy for you.

    The neatness of work depends on your skill. At the time of making holes, don’t give extra force and hammering. Using a basic leather hole punch is the best practice in this case. If the leather is too much thick, you can create an indentation alongside the belt and punch over it.

    If you make this hole with extra hammering, the other side of your leather will be poked. For this, turn over the strap and remove all the extra leather poked for hammering. Now seal the entire hole with shoe polish using a toothpick or other tools.

    Step-5 Stitching the Belt Edge With

    This is the easiest part of making a leather belt. Don’t worry if you don’t have stitching leather experience; you will learn from my tutorial. It would be best if you had a strong hand and patience to do this task easily. Grab your leather needle (2 pieces) and thread. Waxed thread is better for leather stitching.

    Thread off the needle from both sides of the thread and make a Savoy knot (Figure-Eight Knot) tightly and leave 1 or 1 ½ inches extra thread from both sides. Now place your strap into a stitching pony to place it properly. This is the craftsman’s choice. Now I’m going to explain the tricky part of leather stitching. Oh, it’s really tough? My answer is no. Once you understand, this is easy. Let’s start stitching.

    Insert one needle into the hole of the strap and balance both sides thread. Using the right hand, make a loop through-hole and insert the second hand from the left side to make another loop in the same hole. Leave both hands after binding them tightly. Again start from the right side. This process will continue until the end of your edge. For finishing, make 2 or 3 backstitches and knot them. Cut both threads and seal the protruding part of the thread using heat.

    Step-6  Making the Hole for Belts

    From the tipping point of your strap, measure 4 inches and put a pencil mark on the middle of the strap for the initial hole. This primary mark is the guideline for the next hole. Now mark 4 more points 1 inch apart from each point after leaving 4 inches tail. Here I’m using a 3 1/16 inches punch tool. Make all the holes carefully. You can add more holes if you need them.

    Step-7  Making and Skiving the Leather for Buckle

    Here the thickness of my leather is almost 3 ½ mm. This is too much for bending it properly. Now I’m going to make it thinner for buckle attaches. This step is a little time-consuming because if you slice excess from the strap, you can’t add leather in return. So, measure 6 inches from the endpoint and mark in the strap. Using a sharp, rounded knife removes 1 ½ mm extra thickness from the buckle side.

    Step-8 Prepare the Strap for Buckle

    Once the buckle end’s thinning is done, it’s time to make holes for securing the buckle and a passage for the tongue. From the endpoint, measure in 2 inches and 3 inches and create holes by punching. Now measure 1 inch apart from the second hole and mark starting and ending point in 1 inch for buckle tongue. After that, create holes and connect the holes by using a utility tool. Now bend the thin side to create 2 more centered holes.

    Step-8 Creating Loops for Belt

    This is an additional part; if you don’t like to use a loop, skip this step. Suppose you like to give an extra edge to your belt then follow my instruction. Take a thin strap for a leather loop; if you don’t have any thin leather, use a thick one and slice down by using a rounded knife. After completing the thinning process, the measure by roundup from the strap. Once the measurement is completed, make two holes in each opening side and stitch them as I mentioned above.

    Step-9 Assembling the Buckle Inside the Strap

    For securing buckle, you have many options. You can stitch them or rivet them. Here I’m going to use an easy method which is, attaching Chicago screws. This technique is very easy for buckle attachment. First, you must insert the buckle, screw the first hole, and then place the loop and finish by screwing the second hole.

    Step-10 Smoothing Inner part of Belt

    Apply Gum to the surface of the inner part and apply smooth rubbing to remove fuzziness.
